A Trip to Gülhane Park, Istanbul

Several arrangements and restorations have been made to Gülhane Park, one of the unique gardens of Topkapi Palace, turning it into a destination for urban residents seeking fresh air, tree shade, and vibrant flowers. The park, one of Istanbul's most prized assets, offers a glimpse into the city's past through old monuments like the Goths Column and tea gardens with scenic beauty.

During the April Tulip Festival, Gulhane Park's 100,000 square metres of space provides its visitors with the most beautiful photo backgrounds. The busiest time of year is when summer events like concerts are held here. It is possible to see ash heron nests among bare tree branches in the winter and spring. The Roman Cistern from the first part of the 4th century and the poorly preserved St. Paul's Orphanage from the 6th century are two of the antiquities you may view in the park. The University of Constantinople was housed in an orphanage in the 13th century. You will come across highly priceless monuments and artefacts as you follow the tram in the direction of Eminönü, except those close to the park's outside walls.

The column of the Goths

Its 15 metres high Corinthian style crown stands out inside the park on the hill overlooking Sarayburnu. Byzas, the founder of Byzantine, previously had a statue on the column, according to Byzantine historian Nicephorus Gregoras. It's unclear from the pedestal's scarcely legible "in commemoration of those who returned after the triumph over the Goths" whether this column was built in honour of Constantine the Great, who founded the city, or Claudius Gothicus II, one of the two emperors who both defeated the Goths.

Islamic Science and Technology History Museum

The unique stables from the Ottoman era were restored, and as a result, the museum was opened to the public. It caters to specialised interests and has music, shipping, medicine, zoology, and architecture departments. But also provides practical examples for individuals who wish to learn about the historical accomplishments of the Islamic world. Unfortunately, many of the pieces on show are copies of originals that can currently be found in foreign museums. Some of them were created while considering the surviving depictions and the original. However, it is possible to find some excellent musical instruments.

Ataturk Statue in Sarayburnu

Sarayburnu can be found if you enter the Sogukçeşme Gate and proceed through the park. The first statue of Ataturk to be constructed in Turkey is also seen here.
